A blocked drain is one of the most disruptive plumbing problems a homeowner can face. But not all blockages are the same — and the right fix depends entirely on what's causing the problem and where it is.

This guide explains exactly how we diagnose and clear blocked drains in Northern Rivers homes: the tools we use, what each method achieves, and how to tell whether a simple jet will fix it or whether you're looking at something more serious.

Why Diagnosis Comes Before Treatment

The biggest mistake homeowners (and some plumbers) make is going straight to clearing the blockage without understanding what caused it. You can jet a drain clean in 20 minutes — but if you haven't identified the underlying cause, it'll block again within weeks.

Before we touch a blocked drain, we want to know:

  • Where exactly is the blockage? (Which section of pipe, how far from the access point)
  • What's causing it? (Root intrusion, grease build-up, collapsed pipe, foreign object, offset joint)
  • What's the condition of the pipe? (Is it worth clearing, or does it need relining or replacement?)

Getting these answers right saves time, money, and repeat call-outs.

Diagnostic Tools and Methods

Visual Inspection

The first step is always a visual check of what's accessible — inspection openings, gully traps, and any exposed pipework. This tells us:

  • Whether the blockage is in the house drain or the sewer main
  • Whether there's any visible damage or root intrusion at accessible points
  • Which fixtures are affected (helps narrow down the location)

A blockage that affects only one fixture (e.g., a single sink) is usually in the branch drain serving that fixture. A blockage that affects multiple fixtures — or causes sewage to back up at the lowest point in the house — is usually in the main drain.

CCTV Drain Camera Inspection

A CCTV drain camera is a waterproof camera on a flexible rod that we push through the drain pipe. It transmits live video to a monitor, allowing us to see exactly what's inside the pipe.

What CCTV inspection reveals:

  • Root intrusions — roots entering through joints or cracks, ranging from fine hair-like roots to thick woody masses
  • Grease and fat build-up — accumulated deposits narrowing the pipe bore
  • Collapsed or cracked sections — pipe damage from ground movement, tree roots, or age
  • Offset joints — where pipe sections have shifted out of alignment, creating a ledge that catches debris
  • Foreign objects — toys, wipes, rags, or other items that have been flushed
  • Pipe condition — the overall state of the pipe, including corrosion, scaling, and structural integrity

Why CCTV matters: Without a camera, we're working blind. We might clear a blockage caused by a collapsed pipe section — but the pipe will block again immediately because the structural problem remains. CCTV lets us see the problem and plan the right fix.

After clearing: We always recommend a post-clearing CCTV inspection to confirm the pipe is fully clear and to check for any damage that may have been hidden by the blockage.

Acoustic Leak and Blockage Detection

For suspected blockages or leaks that aren't accessible by camera — for example, under a concrete slab or deep underground — we use acoustic detection equipment.

Acoustic detectors amplify the sound of water movement (or the absence of it) through the ground. By moving the sensor along the pipe route, we can pinpoint the location of a blockage or leak to within a few centimetres — without any digging.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Slab leaks (water leaking under a concrete floor)
  • Locating blockages in pipes buried under driveways or landscaping
  • Confirming the location of a pipe before excavation

Drain Tracing and Locating

When we need to know exactly where a pipe runs — for excavation or relining — we use a drain locator. A transmitter is inserted into the pipe and a receiver on the surface tracks its position. This gives us the precise route and depth of the pipe, which is essential for accurate excavation and for avoiding other services.

Clearing Methods: What We Use and When

High-Pressure Water Jetting

High-pressure water jetting (also called hydro-jetting or drain jetting) is the most effective method for clearing most types of blocked drains. A high-pressure pump forces water through a flexible hose and a specialised nozzle at pressures of 3,000–5,000 PSI.

How it works: The nozzle has forward-facing jets that cut through blockages and rear-facing jets that propel the hose forward through the pipe. The combination of cutting action and water volume flushes debris back through the pipe and out the access point.

What jetting clears effectively:

  • Grease and fat build-up — the high-pressure water emulsifies and flushes grease deposits
  • Root intrusions — jetting cuts through roots and flushes them out (though roots will regrow without further treatment)
  • Silt and sediment — particularly effective for stormwater drains after flooding
  • Soap scum and scale — breaks up mineral deposits in the pipe

What jetting doesn't fix:

  • Collapsed or cracked pipes — jetting will clear the blockage temporarily, but the structural problem remains
  • Offset joints — the ledge that catches debris is still there after jetting
  • Severely root-damaged pipes — if roots have caused structural damage, the pipe needs relining or replacement

Jetting nozzle types:

Different nozzle configurations are used for different situations:

  • Penetrating nozzle: For breaking through solid blockages
  • Rotating nozzle: For cutting roots and scrubbing pipe walls
  • Chain flail: For heavy root intrusions and scale
  • Flat nozzle: For flat-bottomed drains and gully traps

After jetting: We always follow up with a CCTV inspection to confirm the pipe is clear and to check for any damage revealed by the cleaning process.

Electric Eel (Drain Snake / Auger)

An electric eel is a rotating steel cable with a cutting head that's fed into the drain. It's effective for cutting through root intrusions and breaking up solid blockages.

When we use an electric eel:

  • For initial penetration of a solid blockage before jetting
  • In situations where jetting isn't practical (e.g., very small pipes, restricted access)
  • For cutting roots in pipes where jetting alone isn't sufficient

Limitations: An electric eel cuts through a blockage but doesn't flush it out. It's usually followed by jetting to clear the debris.

Manual Rodding

For simple blockages close to an access point — a gully trap blocked with leaves, or a short branch drain with a minor obstruction — manual rodding with flexible drain rods can be effective and quick.

When we use rodding:

  • Simple, accessible blockages
  • As a first-pass method before bringing in heavier equipment
  • For clearing gully traps and inspection openings

Root Intrusion: The Northern Rivers' Biggest Drain Problem

Root intrusion is the most common cause of blocked drains in the Northern Rivers, and it deserves its own section.

How Roots Get In

Tree roots don't break into pipes — they find their way in through existing weaknesses: loose joints, micro-cracks, and the small gaps where pipe sections connect. Once inside, roots grow rapidly because the pipe provides everything they need: moisture, nutrients, and oxygen.

A root intrusion that starts as a few fine threads can fill an entire pipe section within 12–18 months.

The Most Problematic Trees in the Northern Rivers

  • Camphor laurel — the most common cause of root intrusions in Lismore, Ballina, and Byron Bay. Aggressive root system, extremely common in older residential areas.
  • Ficus and fig trees — roots can travel 15+ metres from the trunk. Common in older gardens and as street trees.
  • Jacaranda — popular street tree with wide-spreading surface roots that also go deep.
  • Liquidambar — increasingly common in newer suburbs, with roots that seek out moisture aggressively.
  • Bamboo — the rhizome root system can penetrate pipes from surprising distances.

Important: The tree doesn't need to be on your property. Street trees and trees on neighbouring properties are responsible for a significant proportion of root intrusions we deal with.

Clearing Root Intrusions

Step 1 — CCTV inspection: Confirm the location and extent of the root intrusion. This tells us whether we're dealing with fine root threads, a significant root mass, or roots that have caused structural damage to the pipe.

Step 2 — Jetting with rotating nozzle: High-pressure jetting with a rotating or chain flail nozzle cuts through roots and flushes them out. For light to moderate intrusions, this is often sufficient.

Step 3 — Post-clearing CCTV: Confirm the pipe is clear and assess the condition of the pipe wall. If the roots have caused cracking or structural damage, we discuss the options for repair.

Step 4 — Root treatment (optional): For pipes with recurring root problems, we can apply a root inhibitor after clearing. This slows regrowth but doesn't prevent it permanently.

Step 5 — Relining or replacement: If the pipe is structurally compromised, clearing the roots is only a temporary fix. The long-term solution is pipe relining (see below) or excavation and replacement.

How Often Will Roots Come Back?

After jetting, roots typically regrow within 12–24 months in the Northern Rivers climate. If you have a known root intrusion problem, we recommend:

  • Annual CCTV inspection and jetting as preventive maintenance
  • Considering pipe relining to permanently seal the entry points

Pipe Relining: The No-Dig Solution

Pipe relining is a method of repairing damaged or root-invaded pipes from the inside, without excavation. A flexible liner impregnated with resin is inserted into the pipe and inflated against the pipe wall. The resin cures to form a new, smooth pipe inside the old one.

When Relining Is the Right Choice

  • Recurring root intrusions — relining seals the joints and cracks that roots enter through, permanently stopping root intrusion in the relined section
  • Cracked or fractured pipes — relining restores structural integrity without digging
  • Offset joints — relining bridges the offset and creates a smooth bore
  • Pipes under concrete slabs, driveways, or landscaping — relining avoids the cost and disruption of excavation

The Relining Process

  1. CCTV inspection — confirm the pipe condition and measure the section to be relined
  2. Thorough cleaning — the pipe must be completely clean before relining. We jet the pipe and do a final CCTV check.
  3. Liner preparation — the liner is cut to length and saturated with resin
  4. Liner insertion — the liner is inserted into the pipe using an inversion drum or pull-in-place method
  5. Curing — the liner is inflated against the pipe wall and the resin cures (using ambient temperature, hot water, or UV light depending on the system)
  6. Final CCTV inspection — confirm the liner is correctly installed and the pipe is clear

Relining isn't suitable for every situation — severely collapsed pipes, pipes with very tight bends, or pipes with multiple complex defects may require excavation. We'll always give you an honest assessment of which option is right for your situation.

Grease and Fat Blockages: A Growing Problem

Grease and fat blockages are the second most common cause of blocked drains in the Northern Rivers, and they're entirely preventable.

How Grease Blockages Form

When you pour cooking fat, oil, or grease down the drain, it's liquid. But as it cools in the pipe, it solidifies and sticks to the pipe wall. Over time, layer builds on layer until the pipe bore is significantly reduced — or completely blocked.

Hot water doesn't help as much as people think. It keeps the grease liquid long enough to travel further down the pipe before solidifying — which means the blockage forms further from the access point, making it harder to clear.

What Causes Grease Blockages

  • Cooking fats and oils poured down the sink
  • Butter, lard, and meat fats
  • Soap scum (particularly from bar soap) combining with hard water minerals
  • Food scraps containing fat (even small amounts accumulate over time)

Clearing Grease Blockages

High-pressure jetting is the most effective method for clearing grease blockages. The hot, high-pressure water emulsifies the grease and flushes it through the system.

For severe build-up, we may use a combination of jetting and a degreasing agent introduced into the pipe before jetting.

Prevention

  • Never pour fats, oils, or grease down any drain — wipe pans with paper towel before washing
  • Use a sink strainer to catch food scraps
  • Run hot water for 30 seconds after washing greasy dishes — but don't rely on this alone
  • Enzyme drain treatments — monthly use of an enzyme-based drain treatment can help break down grease build-up in the pipe

Stormwater Drains: A Different Challenge

Stormwater drains handle rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, and gardens. They're separate from the sewage system and discharge to waterways or council stormwater infrastructure.

In the Northern Rivers, stormwater drains face particular challenges:

  • Leaf and debris accumulation — the region's lush vegetation means stormwater drains can fill with leaves, twigs, and organic matter quickly
  • Silt and sediment — heavy rainfall events wash silt into stormwater drains, which settles and gradually reduces capacity
  • Root intrusion — the same trees that invade sewer pipes also invade stormwater pipes
  • Flood damage — major flood events can collapse or displace stormwater pipes

Signs of a blocked stormwater drain:

  • Water pooling in the yard after rain
  • Overflowing gutters (check downpipes first)
  • Water entering the house through subfloor vents or low-level openings
  • Wet patches in the yard that don't dry out

Clearing stormwater drains: We use the same CCTV and jetting methods for stormwater drains as for sewer drains. For drains blocked with silt and debris, jetting is highly effective. For root intrusions or structural damage, the same repair options apply.

  • Sewage backing up into the house — health hazard, call immediately
  • Multiple fixtures blocked simultaneously — indicates a main drain blockage
  • Sewage smell inside the house — possible blocked vent or main drain issue
  • Water pooling near the house foundation — risk of structural damage
  • Blocked drain before a major rain event — stormwater drains need to be clear before the wet season

Preventive Maintenance: The Cheapest Option

The most cost-effective approach to blocked drains is prevention. Here's what we recommend:

Every month:

  • Use an enzyme drain treatment in kitchen and bathroom drains
  • Check that all drain covers and gully grates are in place and clear of debris

Every year:

  • CCTV inspection of main drain (especially for homes with mature trees nearby)
  • Clear stormwater drain grates and downpipe outlets before the wet season

Every 3–5 years:

  • Full CCTV inspection of the entire drain system

  • Consider a baseline CCTV inspection to understand the condition of your pipes before problems develop
