1. Water draining slower than usual
This is the most common early sign. If your kitchen sink, bathroom basin, or shower is taking longer to drain than it used to, something is restricting the flow. It might be a build-up of grease, hair, soap scum, or even tree roots starting to infiltrate the pipe.
Don't ignore it. A slow drain today is a fully blocked drain tomorrow.
2. Gurgling or bubbling sounds from your pipes
That strange gurgling noise when you flush the toilet or drain the bath isn't just annoying — it's your pipes telling you there's trapped air in the system. Air gets trapped when water can't flow freely past a blockage, and it has to find another way out.
If you're hearing gurgling from multiple fixtures at the same time, the blockage is likely in your main sewer line rather than a single branch pipe.
3. Unpleasant smells coming from drains
A healthy drain doesn't smell. If you're getting a foul odour rising from your kitchen sink, bathroom drain, or laundry tub, it's a sign that organic material — food scraps, grease, hair — has built up inside the pipe and is starting to decompose.

4. Multiple fixtures backing up at the same time
If just one drain is slow, the blockage is probably localised to that fixture. But if your toilet, sink, and shower are all draining slowly at the same time — or if flushing the toilet causes water to back up in the bath — the problem is almost certainly in your main sewer line.
This is a more serious situation that needs professional attention quickly. A main line blockage can cause sewage to back up into your home if left untreated.
5. Water rising in the toilet bowl when you flush
Under normal circumstances, flushing the toilet causes the water level to drop, not rise. If you're seeing the water level rise before it eventually drains, or if it's draining much more slowly than usual, there's a blockage somewhere in the system.
This is one of the clearest signs that something is wrong and needs to be dealt with promptly.
