5 Warning Signs Your Drain Is About to Block (Northern Rivers Homes)

A blocked drain rarely happens without warning. In most cases, your plumbing gives you plenty of signals before things go seriously wrong — you just need to know what to look for.

As a plumber who's worked across Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore, Mullumbimby, and the wider Northern Rivers for years, I've seen the same story play out over and over: a homeowner notices something's a bit off, puts it off for a few weeks, and then calls us when the bathroom is flooded or the toilet won't flush.

The good news? Catch it early and it's usually a quick, affordable fix. Leave it too long and you're looking at a much bigger job.

Here are the five warning signs you should never ignore.

1. Water Is Draining Slower Than Usual

This is the most common early sign — and the one people most often dismiss.

If your kitchen sink, bathroom basin, or shower is taking noticeably longer to drain than it used to, something is building up in the pipe. It might be grease and food scraps in the kitchen, hair and soap scum in the bathroom, or tree roots working their way into an outdoor drain.

A slow drain doesn't mean a blocked drain yet — but it means one is coming if you don't act.

What to do: Don't reach for the chemical drain cleaner. Those products can damage older pipes and rarely fix the underlying cause. Call a plumber for a proper assessment.

2. You Can Hear Gurgling Sounds

If you flush the toilet and hear a gurgling sound from a nearby drain, or you run the kitchen sink and hear bubbling from the bathroom, that's a sign of a partial blockage somewhere in the system.

The gurgling happens because air is being pushed through the water in the trap — it's the pipe trying to breathe around an obstruction. It's a classic early warning sign that something is restricting flow.

What to do: Don't ignore it. Gurgling from multiple fixtures at once is especially serious — it often means the blockage is in the main sewer line, not just a single branch pipe.

3. Unpleasant Smells Coming From Drains

A healthy drain shouldn't smell. If you're getting a sewage smell, rotten egg odour, or musty stench rising from your kitchen or bathroom drains, it usually means one of two things:

  • Organic matter (food, hair, grease) is decomposing inside the pipe
  • The water seal in the trap has dried out or been displaced by a partial blockage

In older Northern Rivers homes — particularly those on acreage with septic systems — drain smells can also indicate a problem with the on-site wastewater system. That's a separate issue, but equally important to address quickly.

What to do: Pour a bucket of water down any floor drains that rarely get used to refresh the trap seal. If the smell persists, call a plumber.

4. Water Pooling Around Floor Drains or Backing Up

If water is pooling around a floor drain in your laundry, bathroom, or garage — or if water is backing up into your shower when you run the washing machine — you have a blockage that's already restricting flow significantly.

This is the stage where most people finally call a plumber. By this point, the blockage is usually well established and will need professional clearing.

What to do: Stop using the affected fixtures if possible and call a plumber promptly. Continuing to use the system can cause sewage to back up into the house.

5. Multiple Fixtures Backing Up at the Same Time

This is the most serious sign on the list. If your toilet, shower, and laundry drain are all backing up or draining slowly at the same time, the blockage is almost certainly in the main sewer line — the pipe that carries waste from your entire property to the street.

A main line blockage is not a DIY job. It requires professional equipment — typically high-pressure water jetting and often CCTV inspection to find the exact cause.

In the Northern Rivers, tree root intrusion is one of the most common causes of main line blockages. The subtropical climate means fast-growing trees, and their roots are drawn to the moisture and nutrients inside sewer pipes. Once roots get in, they grow quickly and can cause serious damage if left untreated.

What to do: Call a licensed plumber immediately. Don't use any plumbing fixtures until the blockage is cleared.

What Causes Blocked Drains in Northern Rivers Homes?

The most common culprits we see across the region:

  • Tree roots — particularly from fig trees, camphor laurels, and bamboo, which are common in Northern Rivers gardens
  • Grease and fat — poured down kitchen sinks, it solidifies and builds up over time
  • Hair and soap scum — the number one cause of bathroom drain blockages
  • Foreign objects — wet wipes, cotton buds, and "flushable" wipes that aren't actually flushable
  • Collapsed or cracked pipes — more common in older homes with clay or cast iron pipes

When to Call a Plumber

If you're seeing one or more of the warning signs above, don't wait. A blocked drain that's caught early is usually a straightforward job — high-pressure water jetting clears most blockages in under an hour.

Leave it too long and you risk:

  • Sewage backing up into your home
  • Damage to pipes from root intrusion
  • Flooding and water damage
  • Health hazards from sewage exposure
