When a plumbing emergency strikes, you want to know two things: what's happening and how quickly it can be fixed. This guide covers the most common plumbing emergencies we attend across the Northern Rivers — what causes them, what the response involves, and what you can expect from start to finish.

Burst Pipes

Burst pipes are one of the most common plumbing emergencies we attend, and they can cause significant water damage in a short time.

What Causes Pipes to Burst in the Northern Rivers?

Corrosion: Older copper and galvanised steel pipes corrode from the inside over time. The pipe wall thins until it fails — often at a joint or fitting. Homes built before the 1980s with original copper plumbing are at higher risk.

Water hammer: Water hammer is the banging sound you hear when a tap is closed quickly. The pressure wave travels through the pipes and, over time, can weaken joints and fittings. Severe water hammer can cause immediate failures.

Tree root damage: Tree roots can exert significant pressure on pipes, particularly older clay pipes. As roots grow, they can crack and eventually burst pipes — though this is more common in drain pipes than water supply pipes.

High water pressure: The normal water pressure for residential properties in NSW is 500 kPa. Pressures above this can stress pipes and fittings, particularly at joints. A pressure limiting valve (PLV) should be installed if your pressure exceeds 500 kPa.

Flood damage: The Northern Rivers' history with flooding means some properties have pipes that were damaged by floodwaters — either by physical impact, ground movement, or corrosion from flood contamination.

Age and fatigue: All pipes have a finite lifespan. Copper pipes typically last 50–70 years; galvanised steel 20–50 years; PVC 50–100 years. Pipes approaching the end of their lifespan are more susceptible to failure.

How We Respond to a Burst Pipe

On arrival: We assess the situation — where the burst is, what type of pipe, what damage has occurred, and whether the water supply has been isolated.

Isolating the supply: If the water hasn't been shut off, we do this first. We'll use the main shutoff or the nearest isolation valve to stop the flow.

Locating the burst: For visible pipes, this is straightforward. For pipes inside walls or under floors, we may use acoustic detection equipment or thermal imaging to locate the burst without unnecessary opening up.

Repair options:

  • Direct repair: For accessible pipes, we cut out the damaged section and replace it with new pipe and fittings. This is the preferred approach — it's a permanent fix.
  • Pipe relining: For pipes inside walls or under slabs where access is difficult, relining may be an option for certain types of damage.
  • Temporary repair: In some situations — particularly late at night when a full repair isn't practical — we may make a temporary repair to restore water supply and return to complete the permanent repair the next day.

Restoring supply: Once the repair is complete, we restore the water supply, check for leaks, and test the pressure.

Typical response time: 30–60 minutes for Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay, and Casino. Slightly longer for more remote areas.

Typical repair time: 1–3 hours depending on the location and complexity of the burst.

Sewage Backups

A sewage backup is one of the most unpleasant and potentially hazardous plumbing emergencies. When the main sewer drain blocks, sewage has nowhere to go — it backs up through the lowest fixtures in the house.

What Causes Sewage Backups?

Root intrusion: The most common cause in the Northern Rivers. Tree roots enter the sewer pipe through joints and cracks, grow until they fill the pipe, and cause a complete blockage. See our detailed guide on blocked drains diagnostics and jetting for more on root intrusions.

Grease accumulation: Years of cooking fat poured down the drain accumulates in the sewer pipe, gradually reducing the bore until the pipe blocks completely.

Foreign objects: Wipes (including "flushable" ones), sanitary products, cotton buds, and other items that shouldn't be flushed can cause blockages — either on their own or by catching on a partial root intrusion.

Collapsed pipe: A severely damaged or collapsed pipe section can cause a complete blockage. This is more common in older clay pipes.

Council sewer main blockage: Sometimes the blockage isn't in your property's pipes — it's in the council sewer main. If multiple properties in your street are affected, this is likely the cause. Call your local council's after-hours line.

How We Respond to a Sewage Backup

On arrival: We assess which fixtures are affected and whether the blockage is in the property drain or the council main. We locate the nearest inspection opening and check the level of sewage in the system.

CCTV inspection: Before clearing, we insert the CCTV camera to identify the cause and location of the blockage. This is critical — clearing a blockage caused by a collapsed pipe without knowing it's collapsed means it'll block again immediately.

Clearing the blockage: We use high-pressure water jetting to clear the blockage. For root intrusions, we use a rotating or chain flail nozzle to cut through the roots. For grease, we use a penetrating nozzle and high-volume water to emulsify and flush the build-up.

Post-clearing inspection: After clearing, we run the camera through again to confirm the pipe is fully clear and to assess the pipe condition. If there's structural damage, we discuss the options.

Sanitising: We clean and sanitise the inspection opening and any areas where sewage has been exposed.

Typical response time: 30–60 minutes for main centres. We treat sewage backups as priority emergencies.

Typical resolution time: 1–2 hours for a standard root intrusion or grease blockage. Longer if structural damage is found.

Gas Leaks

A gas leak is the most serious plumbing emergency. Natural gas and LPG are both highly flammable, and a gas leak creates a risk of explosion and fire as well as asphyxiation.

What Causes Gas Leaks?

Corroded fittings: Gas fittings corrode over time, particularly in coastal environments. The Northern Rivers' coastal areas — Byron Bay, Ballina, Lennox Head — have higher rates of corrosion due to salt air.

Damaged flexible connectors: The flexible connectors that connect gas appliances to the fixed gas line have a limited lifespan. They can crack, split, or develop leaks — particularly if they've been kinked or if the appliance has been moved.

Failed appliance components: Gas appliances have internal components (valves, burners, heat exchangers) that can fail and cause gas to escape.

Underground pipe damage: Underground gas pipes can be damaged by ground movement, root intrusion, or accidental damage during excavation.

Improper installation: Gas work that hasn't been done by a licensed gas fitter can have fittings that aren't properly sealed or components that aren't correctly installed.

How We Respond to a Gas Leak

Safety first: If you suspect a gas leak, leave the house immediately and call the gas emergency line (1800 GAS GAS / 1800 427 427). The gas network will attend to make the situation safe before we arrive.

On arrival (after gas network has attended): We use a gas leak detector to locate the source of the leak. This device detects gas concentrations in the air and can pinpoint the leak location precisely.

Repair: Depending on the cause, the repair may involve:

  • Replacing a corroded fitting or flexible connector
  • Repairing or replacing a section of gas pipe
  • Repairing or replacing a faulty appliance component
  • Pressure-testing the entire gas system to confirm there are no other leaks

Certification: All gas work must be certified. We provide a Certificate of Compliance for all gas repairs and installations.

Pressure testing: After any gas repair, we pressure-test the system to confirm it's leak-free before restoring the gas supply.

Important: All gas work in NSW must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Terry is licensed for gas fitting work across the Northern Rivers.

Hot Water System Failures

A hot water system failure isn't always an emergency — but it can be, particularly if the system is leaking.

Types of Hot Water Failures

No hot water (no leak): The system has failed but isn't leaking. This is inconvenient but not an emergency. We can usually attend same-day or next-day and replace the system.

Leaking hot water system: A leaking tank is an emergency. Hot water tanks cannot be repaired — once the tank is leaking, it needs to be replaced. A leaking tank can cause significant water damage if not addressed quickly.

Pressure relief valve discharging: The PTR valve is a safety device that releases pressure if the system overheats. Occasional small discharges are normal. Continuous or frequent discharge indicates a problem — usually a faulty thermostat or excessive water pressure — and needs prompt attention.

Gas smell near the hot water system: Treat this as a gas leak (see above).

How We Respond to a Hot Water Emergency

Leaking tank: We shut off the water supply to the unit and the gas or electrical supply. We assess the damage and discuss replacement options. We carry stock of the most common systems and can usually install the same day.

No hot water: We diagnose the fault — failed element, failed thermostat, failed gas valve, etc. — and either repair or replace the unit depending on its age and condition.

PTR valve discharging: We diagnose the cause — usually a faulty thermostat or expansion control valve — and repair or replace the faulty component.

Flooding from Appliances

Washing machine hose failures are one of the most common causes of household flooding. A standard washing machine hose can release 200+ litres per minute if it fails — enough to flood a house in minutes.

Common Appliance Flooding Causes

Washing machine hoses: Rubber hoses degrade over time and can split or burst. The failure is often sudden and catastrophic. Hoses should be replaced every 5 years.

Dishwasher hoses: Similar to washing machine hoses, dishwasher supply and drain hoses can fail. Dishwasher flooding is usually slower than washing machine flooding but can still cause significant damage.

Refrigerator ice maker lines: The small plastic tubing that supplies water to refrigerator ice makers can crack or become disconnected. The flow rate is low but the leak can go unnoticed for a long time.

Hot water system overflow: As described above, a leaking hot water tank can cause significant flooding.

How We Respond to Appliance Flooding

Isolating the supply: We shut off the water supply to the appliance — either at the individual shutoff valve or at the main.

Assessing the damage: We check for water damage to floors, walls, and subfloor. We advise on drying and restoration requirements.

Repair: We replace the failed hose or fitting and test the repair before restoring the water supply.

Prevention advice: We recommend replacing all washing machine hoses with stainless steel braided hoses, which are significantly more durable than rubber hoses. We also recommend installing a flood stop device — an automatic shutoff that detects water on the floor and shuts off the supply.

Blocked Toilets and Drain Backups

While a single blocked toilet is usually not an emergency, it becomes one when:

  • Sewage is backing up into other fixtures
  • Multiple toilets are blocked simultaneously
  • The toilet has been blocked for more than 24 hours with no alternative available

How We Respond

Single blocked toilet: We use a closet auger (toilet snake) to clear the blockage. If the blockage is further down the drain, we may use jetting. We check the toilet trap and drain for any damage.

Multiple fixtures blocked: This indicates a main drain blockage. We treat this as a sewage backup (see above) — CCTV inspection followed by jetting.

The Northern Rivers Emergency Plumbing Landscape

The Northern Rivers has some specific characteristics that affect emergency plumbing response:

Geographic spread: The region covers a large area — from Grafton in the south to Tweed Heads in the north, and west to Kyogle and Tenterfield. Response times to remote areas are longer than to main centres.

Older housing stock: Much of the Northern Rivers' residential housing was built in the 1960s–1980s. This means a higher proportion of older pipes — clay, cast iron, and early PVC — that are more prone to failure.

Tree coverage: The region's lush vegetation means root intrusions are more common here than in many other parts of NSW.

Flood history: Properties that have been flooded may have pipes that were damaged by floodwaters — either by physical impact or by the corrosive effects of flood contamination.

Coastal environment: Properties in coastal areas (Byron Bay, Ballina, Lennox Head, Yamba) are subject to accelerated corrosion from salt air. Gas fittings, copper pipes, and hot water systems in these areas have shorter lifespans than inland properties.

After-hours call-out fee: $150–$300 depending on the time and day. This covers the cost of getting to you outside business hours.

Labour: Charged at an hourly rate. Emergency rates are typically 50–100% higher than standard rates.

Materials: Charged at cost plus a margin. We carry common materials on the van, so most repairs can be completed on the first visit.

Total cost: A typical emergency repair (burst pipe, sewage backup) costs $400–$900 all up. Complex repairs or those requiring specialist equipment cost more.

Insurance: Many emergency plumbing repairs are covered by home insurance. We can provide a detailed invoice and report to support your claim.

Preventing Plumbing Emergencies

Most plumbing emergencies are preventable with regular maintenance. Here's a quick checklist:

Every year:

  • CCTV drain inspection (especially if you have mature trees)
  • Check all flexible hose connections (washing machine, dishwasher, hot water system)
  • Test all isolation valves to confirm they operate
  • Check the hot water system pressure relief valve
  • Inspect gas flexible connectors for signs of cracking or corrosion

Every 5 years:

  • Replace washing machine and dishwasher hoses
  • Have gas appliances serviced by a licensed gas fitter
  • Inspect hot water system anode rod

Know your shutoffs:

  • Locate and test the main water shutoff
  • Locate and test individual fixture shutoffs
  • Locate the gas meter shutoff
